Our friendly, and knowledgeable trolling motor technicians will gladly take you through the process of choosing the right motor for your boat. But as the saying goes, ‘knowledge is power’ so let us give you a little knowledge on how to choose the right motor for your needs:

1) Thrust

Thrust refers to the power needed to move a boat through the water. In general, this is determined by the length of the boat but of course, if your boat will be weighed down by heavy equipment or the water you are on is relatively choppy then more thrust may be required.

2) Voltage and Batteries

Trolling motors come in 12, 24 and 36 volts. Once again this will be determined by the size and average weight of the boat and equipment on it. However, the importance of voltage also concerns the length of use. If you are planning on spending a significant amount of time on the water then it is a good idea to get a higher voltage motor, as it will last longer.

3) Motor Position

There are two possibilities for trolling motor position: bow (front) and stern (back). In general, if your boat is 14 feet or larger and can accommodate a bow-mounted motor it is advisable. This is because the act of pulling a boat rather than pushing it gives enhanced control. For smaller boats the difference becomes less substantial but the choice is still important.

4) Control Type

There are three options for controls: foot, hand, or remote. Each have benefits to consider. Hand controls do not clutter the deck and provide direct control. Foot based controls offer hands-free usage. Remote control allows the user to operate the trolling motor from anywhere in the boat. There are quite a few things to think about when it comes to picking out the right motor. But there is no reason to worry, if you have questions just give us a call and we will be glad to help you out in any way we can.
